How to Stick to Good Habits: Simple and Effective Habit Hacks

Updated: Nov 12

We all know the habits that would improve our lives—exercise more, sleep eight hours a night, eat better, limit screen time—the list goes on.

But knowing what’s good for us doesn’t always translate to doing it. The real challenge is sticking to these habits consistently.

In this article, I'll share simple yet effective habit hacks that can help you stick to good habits and reduce those less beneficial ones.

While these might sound like common sense, you'd be surprised at how many people overlook them—and they’re incredibly easy to incorporate.

1. Set Your Alarm and Keep Your Phone Out of Reach

Keeping your phone out of reach reduces the temptation to scroll through social media at night, which can disrupt your sleep. Plus, when the alarm goes off, you’ll have to get up to turn it off, making it easier to start your day without snoozing.

2. Stock Your Kitchen with Healthy Foods Only

Stock your kitchen with ingredients for 3-5 balanced meals each week, so you always have a nutritious option on hand. Avoid buying unhealthy snacks; if they’re not around, you’re less likely to reach for them in moments of hunger or stress.

3. Set Recurring Alarms to Move Throughout the Day

Building small breaks into your day can help you be more active, even with a busy schedule. Alarms to get up and stretch, take a short walk, or do a brief exercise can help counteract long periods of sitting. These small breaks are energising and make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day.

4. Prepare for Your Workout the Night Before

This small step removes a common barrier and makes it easier to get out the door. Better yet, find a workout buddy to keep you accountable and committed to your fitness goals.

5. Schedule Regular Check-Ins for Important Goals

Arrange consistent progress meetings with a friend, mentor, or group, and make them non-negotiable. Knowing you’ll need to share your updates will motivate you to stay on track, as accountability drives us to show up prepared.

Final Thoughts

Building better habits doesn’t require drastic changes; it’s about making small adjustments that create momentum.

Start integrating these habit hacks into your life, and you’ll soon find yourself sticking to positive changes more easily and consistently.

These tips may be straightforward, but consistency is key.
