Don't be a DISC!

This week, I want to dive deep into personality profiling, focusing specifically on the DISC model.

For those with a corporate background, you might recognise personality frameworks like Myers-Briggs or Insights, both of which I’ve explored in the past.

However, as part of my training as a coach, I chose to specialise in DISC—a simpler yet incredibly effective method for understanding personality dynamics.

What is DISC?

DISC is a straightforward yet powerful tool that categorises personality traits into four key quadrants:

Dominance (D): The Results-Driven Leader

Characteristics: Direct, decisive, competitive, and focused on achieving goals.

Communication Style: Straightforward and action-oriented.

Tips for Communicating with a D: Be clear, concise, and to the point. Focus on results and avoid small talk. Show confidence and respect their time.

Influence (I): The Enthusiastic Connector

Characteristics: Outgoing, enthusiastic, persuasive, and people-oriented.

Communication Style: Energetic, engaging, and conversational.

Tips for Communicating with an I: Be friendly and enthusiastic. Highlight exciting possibilities and acknowledge their contributions. Avoid being overly critical or focusing too much on details.

Steadiness (S): The Loyal Team Player

Characteristics: Patient, reliable, empathetic, and focused on harmony.

Communication Style: Calm, supportive, and empathetic.

Tips for Communicating with an S: Be patient and considerate. Emphasise stability and collaboration. Avoid rushing them or introducing sudden changes without explanation.

Conscientiousness (C): The Analytical Problem-Solver

Characteristics: Precise, detail-oriented, systematic, and quality-focused.

Communication Style: Formal, logical, and data-driven.

Tips for Communicating with a C: Provide clear evidence and detailed information. Be structured and professional. Avoid being vague or overly emotional.

While we each have a mix of these traits, most people typically lean strongly towards one primary quadrant. However, our dominant traits can shift based on different environments and circumstances, revealing different aspects of our personality.

How DISC Improves Communication

Understanding DISC profiles allows you to adapt your communication style to suit the preferences of others. This reduces misunderstandings and builds stronger relationships. For example:

In the workplace: Use DISC insights to lead diverse teams more effectively and manage conflicts with empathy.

In sales: Tailor your pitch to match your client's personality, increasing trust and engagement.

In personal relationships: Deepen connections by showing understanding and respect for others' natural tendencies.

By recognising and respecting the differences in DISC profiles, you can become a more effective and influential communicator, fostering better collaboration and mutual understanding.

We all know someone who seems difficult to understand, but by recognising their unique DISC type, it becomes easier to see that their behaviour isn’t weird—it’s just how they’re wired.

DISC promotes a powerful shift from judgment to empathy, fostering stronger and more effective communication.

Why DISC Matters for Communication and Empathy

One of the most useful aspects of DISC is that it helps us appreciate the personality “wiring” of others.

Applying DISC in Coaching, Mentoring, and Business

In my coaching and mentoring work, DISC has been an invaluable tool. By understanding their DISC profile, clients gain insight into their behaviours, responses, and ways of interacting with others.

Many small businesses also find DISC training beneficial, as it enhances teamwork and creates a deeper understanding among employees, leading to a more cohesive workplace culture.

If you know of any small businesses that could benefit from DISC training, get in touch with me on Instagram (@darren_green_coaching) or Linkedin (Darren Green PCC) and let's chat about how I can help you grow your professional and personal life!
