This week, I wanted to talk about a bias we all seem to know but is hidden in plain sight: Parkinson’s Law.
The idea is simple: “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.”
In other words, without a fixed deadline, tasks tend to stretch or get deferred, especially for things that feel less urgent.
What is Parkinson’s Law?
If you've ever left an assignment or task until the last minute, you’ve likely seen Parkinson’s Law in action.
Without a clear deadline, it’s easy to procrastinate, as other tasks with firmer deadlines take priority. This principle doesn’t just apply to work; it’s why household chores often get delayed, waiting indefinitely until the time feels “right” to tackle them.
As Laura Vanderkam points out, we even stretch time for things we find engaging but not necessarily productive. For instance, the average person spends about two hours daily on social media—time that could otherwise be used differently but expands to fit our interest in it.
How to Use Parkinson’s Law to Your Advantage
Understanding this law can help you avoid procrastination. Here are some practical ways to harness it:
1. Set Deadlines, Even if They’re Artificial
Tasks without deadlines can feel endless, so create one yourself. Self-imposed deadlines often work wonders.
2. Break Down Large Tasks
Big projects can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller, manageable steps with individual deadlines to keep momentum.
3. Timebox Your Work
Set a fixed time limit for each task to prevent it from dragging out. Timeboxing helps you stay efficient and focused.
4. Remove Distractions
Limit distractions like social media while working, as they can lead to time stretching unnecessarily.
Final Thoughts: Taking Control of Your Time
Recognising Parkinson’s Law can help you prioritise effectively and overcome procrastination. By setting deadlines, breaking down big tasks, and limiting distractions, you can keep your goals on track.
